I guess I'll just have to see, as I'm sure it's inevitable that at some point I'll manage to do it. The flat part of the covers is not rigid, but a semi-flexible material. I haven't put the top up with them on - yet! Looks like they may survive the experience, as the 'hook' that rotates to secure them goes under part of the top frame - the whole assembly rises with the top, so hopefully the covers will just pop out and fall to the side. I liked the finished look they give to that area if I'm going to have the top down for an extended period of time. Even knowing where they were and working carefully, I still managed to break a couple out of the 32.Īs for the black convertible top 'fillers', I ordered them through Tischer, not LeatherZ. Easiest to begin with the front covers, as there is only one tab midway up the outside edge to get it started. I used a single 1 inch metal putty knife and carefully worked my way around the covers, flexing them outward enough to release the tabs and pull the cover away. The pictures may also help someone with removal, as it shows where the tabs are - the front cover (left) has 6, and the back has 10. I like the new look - what do you folks think? The finish came out very nice, and very smooth. I wet sanded the new grey front covers and painted them satin black enamel - then baked them for a few hours in the oven, wet sanded again to get rid of a few dust bumps, resprayed, and baked again. So I took great care in removing the existing covers, and managed to remove them with only a couple of broken tabs - leaving more than enough tabs functional to securely reinstall them. Retaining my original 'chrome line' covers on the back of the roll hoops I thought would provide a nice match with the current interior, with the 'chrome line' steering wheel inserts and door pulls. I quite liked it, so thought I'd try something similar on my car to see how it looked. Then while waiting for the parts to arrive, I saw pictures of the covers on the new E89, which had a combination of black and silver/chrome covers. I was thinking of painting the 4 new (grey/silver) covers black, like the covers on the M roadsters. So I ordered the two OEM windblocker fill panels, and also a new set of roll hoop covers. Huge improvement in decreased buffeting, but I wasn't entirely happy with the look -it didn't look complete to me without the fill panels on the roll hoops. Several weeks back I purchased the parts for the factory windblocker 'center section' for my 2006 Z4, and screwed the brackets into the existing roll hoop covers.
